Hi, I’m Maggie

Welcome to Veg Loom. If you’ve ever stared at a packet of seeds and thought, “I want this… but I have no idea where to start,” you’re exactly where you belong.

I’m Maggie O’Connell, a lifelong gardener, a raised bed enthusiast, and the person who will absolutely stop mid-conversation to admire someone’s tomato trellis.

I created Veg Loom because I believe growing your own food should feel possible, even if your “garden space” is a tiny patio, a narrow side yard, or a patch of ground that acts more like a brick than soil ever should.

For context, I garden in a small suburban backyard with heavy clay soil in Zone 7. We get hot summers, surprise cold snaps, and “wait, why is it raining again” weeks. Most of what I share here is tested right where I live, and I’ll always tell you what’s worked for me and what I’m still figuring out. If your climate is different, think of my timelines as a starting point, then adjust for your local seasons.

How it started

My first gardening memories aren’t fancy. They’re simple, and they’re the ones that stick. I grew up snapping green beans on my grandmother’s porch, listening to the screen door squeak and watching bowls slowly fill up while the summer air did that warm, honeyed thing it does.

That porch taught me two big lessons: homegrown food tastes like nothing else, and the best garden advice usually sounds like a story.

Why raised beds

When I bought my first home, I imagined stepping outside and planting straight into the earth like my grandmother did. What I actually found was dense, stubborn clay that laughed at my shovel. The first time I tried to dig a garden bed, I learned the hard way that enthusiasm is not a soil amendment.

So I got curious. I started building raised beds, learning how to mix organic matter into soil, and paying attention to the small things that make a big difference, like drainage, mulch, and timing. Somewhere between my first crooked raised bed and my first truly thriving season, I fell in love with the process.

These days, my happiest place is standing over a bed I’ve just top-dressed with fresh compost, planning what goes where, and imagining all the meals those seedlings will become.

What Veg Loom does

Veg Loom exists to demystify vegetable gardening. Not the glossy, perfect-garden version. The real version, with chewed leaves, surprise heat waves, and that one zucchini plant that suddenly decides to become a jungle.

I’m here to help you grow more food with less stress by focusing on a few fundamentals:

  • Raised bed gardening that works in small suburban spaces and tricky soils
  • Organic soil building that, with steady care and the right inputs, can keep getting better year after year
  • Seasonal planting rhythms so you know what to do now, not “someday”
  • Simple companion planting to support healthier plants and better yields
  • Practical problem-solving for pests, nutrient issues, and common beginner mistakes

If you’re here because you want the joy of cooking dinner with something you grew yourself, I get it. That feeling never gets old.

What to expect

I write Veg Loom the way I’d talk to you over the fence, hands dirty, probably holding a trowel I forgot to put down. Warm, straightforward, and honest about what works and what doesn’t.

On the site you’ll find:

  • Step-by-step guides for building beds, filling them properly, and getting your first crops going
  • Soil-first advice because healthy soil can prevent a lot of problems and makes the rest of gardening easier
  • Planting timelines and seasonal checklists to keep you moving at the right pace
  • Beginner-friendly troubleshooting for yellowing leaves, stunted seedlings, and “what is eating this” moments

My promise is this: I’ll never make you feel behind. Gardens are built one small habit at a time, and every season is a fresh start.

If you want a simple place to begin, start with your first raised bed and a short list of confidence-boosting crops. Think lettuce, radishes, bush beans, and herbs. Small wins build momentum.

If you prefer a clear next step, start with Build Your First Raised Bed, then follow it with Fill a Raised Bed the Right Way and Easy Crops for Beginners.

What I love

If you’re curious about my personal garden loves, here are the big ones:

  • Heirloom tomatoes, the kind that taste like summer and drip down your wrist
  • Compost experiments, including the batches that turn out perfect and the ones that teach me patience
  • Maximizing yield in small spaces through succession planting, vertical supports, and smart spacing
  • Sustainable, low-input gardening that works with nature instead of wrestling it

My approach leans organic and practical. I focus on building soil, using physical barriers and hand-picking when I can, and reaching for targeted treatments only when a problem is truly getting out of hand.

And yes, I’m endlessly optimistic. You kind of have to be when you’re negotiating with squirrels, aphids, and the occasional mystery fungus.

Welcome to Veg Loom

I’m genuinely glad you’re here. Whether you’re starting with a single container of herbs or planning your first raised bed, Veg Loom is here to make the next step clear and doable.

Take a look around, pick one small project, and start there. Build the bed. Mix the soil. Plant the seeds. Then come back and tell me what’s growing.

From my garden to yours, welcome to Veg Loom.
